Fertility Preservation for Men

Emergency Semen Banking Before Chemotherapy or Radiation therapy.

Ideally, semen should be banked before starting chemotherapy or radiation therapy. The reproductive staff at CRBI realize that time is of the essence and we offer emergency cryobanking services. These services are coordinated with the patient's physician as part of the patient's treatment plan.

Obtaining Semen Banking services:

Call CRBI at 317-817-1147. If time permits and patient is well enough, we will schedule a time for on-site semen collection at CRBI. On-site collection is optimal for maintaining specimen quality prior to freezing. We will need a physician's order to perform cryopreservation services.

CRBI will request that the patient sign an "Agreement for Storage" contract that contains advance directives for the future disposition of the stored semen. CRBI can not store a specimen unless we have a storage contract on file.

Infectious disease screening is required prior to banking a specimen at CRBI. Contact CRBI at 317-817-1147 regarding screening requirements. Specimens are stored in temporary quarantine storage until infectious disease results are on file. Upon receipt of screening results, specimens are transferred to longer-term storage tanks with similarly screened samples, as applicable. CRBI provides on-site storage for a maximum of 5 years. At any time or after 5 years, storage at longer term storage facilities can be arranged.

Post-thaw evaluation is performed on each stored specimen to determine if it will be clinically useful for future reproductive efforts, either for insemination or for in vitro fertilization with or without intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) In the event that the specimen is not viable and cannot be used clinically, CRBI will notify the ordering physician, discard the specimen as medical waste and the patient will not be charged for storage. Limited semen analysis charges will still apply. Please contact CRBI for our current fee schedule.
